Understanding the Army Body Fat Standard

The U.S. Army uses a specific body fat assessment to ensure all Soldiers maintain the necessary level of physical readiness. This calculator uses the official, current one-site tape test formula introduced in 2023, which is a simpler and more accurate method than the previous multi-site test. For historical data or comparison, we also provide the legacy multi-site calculation.

Maximum Allowable Body Fat Standards

Your calculated body fat percentage is compared against the maximum allowable standards set by the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP). These standards vary by age and gender. If your result exceeds the maximum, you may be flagged for the ABCP.

Age Group Maximum % Body Fat (Male) Maximum % Body Fat (Female)

Advanced Metrics: Lean Body Mass and Fat Mass

Beyond just the percentage, this tool provides your Lean Body Mass (LBM) and Fat Mass (FM). LBM is the weight of everything in your body except fat (muscle, bone, water, organs), and FM is the weight of your body fat. These metrics are crucial for setting realistic fitness goals and tracking progress.
