Measurement Guide & Clinical Context
Knee Height
Measure from the heel to the top of the knee with the leg bent at a 90-degree angle. This is the most validated method for bedridden patients.
Demi-span
Measure from the middle of the sternal notch (base of neck) to the tip of the middle finger with the arm outstretched.
Ulna Length
Measure from the point of the elbow (olecranon) to the midpoint of the prominent wrist bone (styloid process).
Why is this important?
Accurate height estimation is critical for bedridden patients to:
- Calculate correct medication dosages (especially for renal or oncology treatments).
- Determine nutritional requirements and BMI.
- Set appropriate ventilator settings in ICU environments.
- Monitor long-term health and fluid balance.
*Note: These formulas provide estimates. Clinical judgment should always be used alongside calculated values.
