Understanding Your Fertility
Your Menstrual Cycle
A typical menstrual cycle is 28 days, but can range from 21-35 days. It has three phases: menstruation (5-7 days), follicular phase (7-10 days), and luteal phase (12-16 days). Understanding your cycle helps predict ovulation.
What is Ovulation?
Ovulation is when your ovary releases an egg. This typically happens 14 days before your next period. The egg can be fertilized for 12-24 hours after release. Sperm can survive 3-5 days (sometimes up to 7 days) in your body.
Your Fertile Window
Your fertile window is the 5-6 days before and including ovulation. This is when you’re most likely to conceive. The 3 days leading up to and including ovulation are your most fertile days, with about 30% chance of pregnancy per cycle.
Signs of Ovulation
- Cervical mucus: Becomes clear, slippery, stretchy (like egg white)
- Basal body temperature: Rises 0.5-1°F after ovulation
- Ovulation pain: Mild cramping on one side
- Breast tenderness: Increased sensitivity
- LH surge: Detected by ovulation predictor kits
Factors Affecting Conception
Age, health, stress, weight, exercise, nutrition, and lifestyle all affect fertility. Women’s fertility peaks in their 20s and declines after 35. Regular intercourse (2-3 times per week) throughout the cycle maximizes chances of conception.
When to Seek Medical Help
Consider seeing a fertility specialist if: you’re under 35 and haven’t conceived after 1 year of trying, you’re over 35 and haven’t conceived after 6 months, you have irregular periods, or you have known fertility issues.
