Understanding Your Kidney Health

What is GFR?

Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) measures how well your kidneys filter waste from your blood. It’s the best overall indicator of kidney function. A normal GFR is 90 or higher, and it naturally declines with age.

Understanding Creatinine

Serum creatinine is a waste product from muscle metabolism filtered by your kidneys. Higher levels suggest reduced kidney function. Creatinine levels vary by age, gender, muscle mass, and diet, so GFR calculations adjust for these factors.

Calculation Methods

CKD-EPI (2021): Recommended standard, race-free formula. MDRD: Older formula, still used in some settings. Both use creatinine, age, and gender to estimate GFR.

Kidney Disease Stages

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) has 5 stages based on GFR. Stage 1-2 indicate mild disease, Stage 3A-3B moderate disease, Stage 4 severe disease, and Stage 5 kidney failure requiring dialysis or transplant.

Risk Factors for Kidney Disease
